About Us

Battery Boy Electric Vehicles converts gas powered vehicles to pure electric. The process involves removing the gas powered engine and adding a controller, motor, and battery pack. A vehicle with a dead engine is a good candidate for a conversion. Almost any vehicle can be converted, but some are easier than others based on weight, battery space, and other factors. Price, range, and performance are based on the electrical components installed. Next, we determine what electrical components will be installed based on your budget and vehicle requirements. David Hawkins bio (Chief Battery)

I came down with the car bug as a very small child, watching my older brother, Jerry (R.I.P.), work on his 50's and 60's era cars at our home, or at the "service station" that he worked for, and also reading his '60's Hot Rod magazines. Another influence was the husband of my day-care grandmother neighbor. As a young teenager, my momma bought me a nice set of tools, so I started fixing my buddies' car before getting my drivers license. My first car, our current racing project, was my rolling science project "back in the day", and was also used for my "drag racing" bug. Having done electrical and some electronics work early in my working career, and some computer work later, combined with being a gearhead, electric vehicles are a nice fit for me, which I got into back in 1999. When I started converting my current daily driver, an '89 S10 pickup, my kids were young and BMX racing, and I was also cleaning up our property, so a truck made a lot of sense for hauling the bikes to the track, and for making trips to the landfill. Both of my kids grew up driving our '79 RX-7 conversion, which also served as a test bed for different components and batteries. I've been involved with many other conversions since catching the EV bug, was an officer with the Denver Electric Vehicle Council, and have helped out with the National Electric Drag Racing Association. Since I've been eating, drinking, and sleeping EV's, having an EV business just seems right!

 

Zach Hawkins bio
I began driving electric vehicles when I was 15. I learned to drive a standard transmission in our Electric Mazda RX-7. In fact, I didn't even know how to pump gas until I was 17. I drove the RX-7 to and from school and around town. Many people were skeptical of its performance until they realized we could break the tires loose through third gear. We ran at Bandimere Speedway a few times running mid 17's in '02 and later getting into the mid 16's with street tires and only a 1000 amp controller. Today, I drive a gasser WRX and while I enjoy the turbo boost, I miss the maximum torque at 0 RPM that allows an EV to jump off the line. That, along with a very consistent race time makes EV's a great vehicle for bracket racing. When the engine dies in the WRX I hope to convert it to electric for track racing. I also own a '10 Toyota Prius which is great for the 500 miles a week I drive for work (finishing basements). I used to fill up 2 or 3 times a week and can now make it the whole week on a tank of gas in the Prius. Many people are skeptical of the performance, capability, and range of EVs, but are surprised to learn the truth of their capabilities. Technology is constantly changing and improving and every day the performance and range of EV's is increasing. In addition, high performance EV's are constantly breaking records and at BBEV's we hope to break some records ourselves. We are currently working on the first 1960's MoPar muscle car for BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) drag racing; check out our photos under the racing section.
